Emily King's Northeast Tour was, in a word, sublime. It was one brilliant week. One week of traveling. One week of non-stop savory music for the ears. One week of laughing so hard that my sides actually burned. One week of photographing some of my favorite people on this planet. We traveled to Philadelphia, New York City, Washington D.C., Boston, Newport, and Providence by means of a massive van that fit nine people plus the band equipment. Nick Hakim and his band opened for Emily at each stop. He is a breath of fresh air. If you love Emily's music, you are bound to love his as well.
I love that my job means to constantly observe the world around you and create your own fresh perspective. Everyone wants to be listened to and have their story heard. The first night of the tour, after Emily finished performing, she went over to the merchandise table to sign CDs, posters, take pictures with her fans and just talk to people. One girl caught my eye as she was getting ready to meet Emily. The girl was so excited, she was shaking a little bit, and as soon as she got up to Emily she immediately started to cry. Emily gave her a really tight hug while the girl started to shake even harder and cried even more. She had just gotten out of the Navy and apparently experienced some incredible heartache. She kept thanking Emily over and over again saying how her music helped her through it all. It was such a beautiful moment to see all this genuine love, appreciation and happiness flowing outwardly from this girl. It's something I'll never forget.
I learned a great deal over the course of the tour... like what a cronut is, how denim is essential to wear for long car rides, and that I'm quite good at rap battles. We started our first few days in New York and Philly, and here are a few of my favorite shots from the adventure...
